Track
Every year there are students of all ages that participate in a spring sport through the school. Track has 23% student participation at RHS, 6% of which work all year round for one goal on their mind: to make it on that podium at State. Statistics show only 6% of the participating students place and get put on the podium. I mean one person per placing, right? How far will the students go to make it past Divisionals? They check records for State to qualify early for their events: 100, 200, 400, 800, miles all this running plus field and throwing events and so many records to try to beat. Can all the records be beaten eventually? Can the students put in enough work? The real question is will they? These are the questions that run through the athlete’s minds. Passion is the key, a will to drive yourself all year round to achieve your most desired goals. Track is an individual sport that you rely on yourself for. It’s not like you have to get better for the team or the guy next to you. All the work, drive, will, and passion is all on you. The striking will to finish the race first, jump the furthest, or the highest is all on you as an athlete. It is your decision to make the leap toward the finish line and always jump into first place, not for the guy next to you, but for yourself. Valencia Medina-Cabrera This is a sport of passion. Basketball takes skill, dedication, team work, and drive. This is a sport that you cannot just play. You have to work day in and day out to be good at this sport. You put in the time in the off season, just to practice during season to be good in season. All this leads to tournament. The biggest time for "ballers" in the season. Tournaments for basketball players is like super bowl for football players. It is kind of a big deal; like a huge deal! Everyone goes to Districts to play against other teams in their district. The first place team is the district champs. Second and third place teams follow first to the next stage. Divisional is even bigger. Being a first place champion in your division means you just won the play offs. Now it is time for the super bowl! Your basketball team wants to go to state. You play the best teams in the state. If you win first place you are the best of the best in the state. Now who wouldn’t want to be the best?
Wrestling, some people love it and some hate the idea of their child getting hurt or losing to another. But you have to think of it as another opportunity for them to try something different, to see if they like the idea.
The interview with Mr.Quenzer IV:What do you think about high school wrestling? Q:I think it's great and I would like to see it in our school. It just gives kids an opportunity to do something so if you're not doing basketball or not into basketball or for some of our boys if you don’t have the right body type to play basketball than it gives you an opportunity to wrestle. IV:What would be some of the benefits of the program and what could be some of the bad things? Q:Some of the good things just gives kids more opportunity to participate in a sport. The bad thing would be to figure out the space the practice, fitting it into our infrastructure would probably the hardest thing but there is no negatives in term of their student body? IV:Do you plan on having a wrestling program in the next couple of years or even next year? Q:You know some of the community members have started a AAU program. So I think that’s a good first start. Over all I don’t get to make the decision of whether or not we have it or not. That’s a collective effort of the school board, school administrators. I’m not really sure but i'm hopeful. IV:Do you think it would At some of the boys and the girls with their anger or frustration? Q:I think any time you have another outlet it helps with a lot of different things. Yes it would help with a variety of things, it gives kids something to do during the winter months when they don’t want to play basketball. In terms of angry and those things it might help during the school day a little more because you're tired from practice and traveling. IV:How many kids do you think would join the group? Q:I think you would probably start with a large number that would began specifically in high school and junior high and then they would get their butts kicked really bad and wrestling is a very aggressive sport, it's not as fun when you lose every match, then they will give up and a lot will quite. I think as the years go along and they started in AAU when they started when they were younger and the years progress the numbers would grow to become really popular IV: Who do you think would be the best fit for the couch to start the program? Q:I know Mr. Coryell use to be a wrestler and has a good relationship with the kids and also a PE teachers and assistant coach in football and in track so I think he would be a good one. IV:If the kids worked hard enough do you think they could make it to state? Q:It's kinda an individual and also a team sport, it's very similar to track I think it would depend on how good some of the individuals are, I always think there are some chances for that. Q:One thing, now that i'm thinking about it. So one of the major problems with wrestling as well is the numbers for schools that have wrestling, in our state are pretty low. So traveling, when I was a principal, in my previous school sometimes we leave on wednesday and we wouldn't come back until Sunday. So there can be a lot of time missed from school, that would be a negative. Another thing is you can't add a boy sport without adding a girls so we would be in title nine violation. So we would have to drop boys cross country or add a spring sport for girls. IV:Would girls be able to wrestle as well? Q:Yeah, but mhsa counts it as a boys sport so it wouldn't count no matter what. So we could add tennis, or softball, or we haven't had a lot of boys in cross country but dropping something isn’t on the top of my list but that's difficult because now you're adding two sports instead of just the one. I think it's a good thing for them, different outlets, I sure would like it but there is a lot that goes into it. IV: Thank you. 2013-2014 was the year our football boys made it to the playoffs for the first time in 14 years. Unfortunately, the outcome was devastating; they were defeated by the Malta Mustangs. That wasn’t the end, in 2014-2015 was the first home playoff game in 20 years, which interestingly enough fell on Halloween. The boys were again defeated, this time by the Big Timber Herders. It’s now 2016 and yet again our Roundup Panthers have secured a position in the playoffs. Now, the team will travel to a small town called Manhattan, all the way over by Bozeman, to play against the Tigers. The journey shouldn’t end there; we hope our boys defeat the Manhattan Tigers and play in the 2nd round of playoff games.
